LAPAROSCOPIC INGUINAL HERNIA (GROIN HERNIA) SURGERY

DEFINITION - INGUINAL HERNIA
Weakness in the abdominal muscle wall in the inguinal (groin) region resulting in herniation of abdominal contents (i.e. abdominal organs or fatty tissue) through the weakness.

DESCRIPTION - LAPAROSCOPIC INGUINAL HERNIA REPAIR
The operation involves the repair of an inguinal hernia using the laparoscopic technique.

INDICATIONS
Inguinal/groin herniae should be repaired to prevent complications (strangulation is the most common serious complication)

ADVANTAGES OF THIS TECHNIQUE
1. "keyhole" incisions should result in less post-operative pain and discomfort.
2. this means a shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to normal activities
including work, and sport.
3. both sides (left and right if indicated) can be repaired without any extra incisions.
4. recurrent hernias can be repaired more effectively.


HOW TO MAKE THE DIAGNOSIS
1. symptoms may include pain in the groin/s with or without a swelling.
2. may occur on both sides
3. may include abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting
