click here for a detailed diagram of the abdomen

DEFINITION
Removal of spleen using a laparoscopic technique.

INDICATIONS
The usual indications for removal of a spleen apply.

ADVANTAGES OF THIS TECHNIQUE
- laparoscopic approach results in excellent visualization without the need for a long, painful incision.
- "keyhole" incisions should result in less post-operative pain and discomfort
- this should mean a shorter stay in hospital and faster return to work and normal activities including sport.
- cosmetically much better because of small incisions

DETAILS OF THE OPERATION
Anaesthetic: General Anaesthetic
Operation: 60 - 120 minutes
Number of incisions: 4 - 5
Hospital stay: 2 - 4 days

POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS
See general complications of laparoscopic surgery

As the spleen is a very muscular organ (large blood supply), bleeding may result if one of the blood vessels is injured. This is the most common complication.
