DEFINITION - ABDOMINAL HERNIA
A weakness in the abdominal muscle wall of the abdominal muscles, often in, or around the umbilicus (umbilical or para-umbilical hernia). The weakness may occur at site of previous operation (incisional hernia). There may be herniation of abdominal contents (i.e. abdominal organs of fatty tissue) through the weakness.

DESCRIPTION - LAPAROSCOPIC / ABDOMINAL INCISIONAL REPAIR
The operation involves repairing the weakness using a type of mesh to close the defect in the muscle, using the laparoscopic technique.

ADVANTAGES OF THIS TECHNIQUE
- "keyhole" incisions should result in less post-operative pain and discomfort
- this may mean shorter hospital stay and a faster return to work and activities
- recurrence of the hernia should occur less frequently using a laparoscopic repair, compared to the open conventional surgery.

HOW TO MAKE THE DIAGNOSIS
- symptoms may include pain or a swelling in the anterior abdominal wall
- may occur around the umbilicus or in the area of previous surgery
- may be associated with abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting.

DETAILS OF THE OPERATION
Anaesthetic: General Anaesthetic (usually)
Operation time: 30 - 90 minutes.
Number of incisions: 3 - 4
Hospital stay: 1 - 3 days.
Potential complications:See general complications of laparoscopic surgery
